Over at mikebrunjes.net, my blog dedicated to Campus Life ministry, there are two new things you should check out. You can read about Campus Life’s first event and sign up for Campus Life updates via email.

The name of the event is Rock Band Idol. It is a promotional event designed to get the name Campus Life on the lips of students. Here is the flyer.

Calliou

06May08

My brother and some friends of ours play in band named Calliou. They are extremely talented and definately worth listening to. The lead singer was recently interviewed by poprockcandymoutain.com. You can check out the interview here and their music here.

I strongly encourage you to check out Jon Foreman’s eps. He is releasing four this year each named after a season: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. The first three are already available. Jon is the lead singer of Switchfoot, but these eps a far from anything you have heard from him before. They are wonderful. They lyrics and the music are both amazing. If you are looking for some songs to start with here a few of my favorites.

Equally Skilled – Fall

White as Snow – Winter

Baptize My Mind – Spring

Your Love is Strong – Spring

New Update

05May08

Last night April and I went down to Ft. Lauderdale to see Bruce Springsteen live. I am a Bruce fan but in no way would consider myself die hard. I now safely say that The Boss is the best live performer I have ever seen. I would have loved to see him rock out when he was in his 20’s because at 58 he started rocking at 8:30 and went full gorilla until 11:15. It was a great show, a great crowd, and an amazing performance. I must admit I was a little nervous that it would turn into an Obama rally. It was far from that he only went political one time when he spoke out against torture before the song “Livin’ In The Future.”

Before his last song he plugged a food bank that was there raising money. The cool thing about it was that it wasn’t some obscure cool celeberity charity it was a group that was working to fight hunger right in South Florida. If you can get a chance to see The Boss or see him again for that matter, do it!

You can catch the set list here.

Here is a review from the Palm Beach Post.

Wednesday was a wonderful day. It started by me using my  card for a free Pike Place’s coffee at Starbucks. I love free stuff. Then that night April and I went to the Chipotle that is opening today because they were giving out free burritos. We had to wait about a half hour for the burrito but it was well worth it, it was free, and I love free stuff. Really who doesn’t love something you don’t have to pay for.

I love free stuff so much, but I have to wonder why I have such a hard time understanding grace. I constantly feel the need to earn my way back into God’s favor, or feel that somehow I can be Christian enough to pay God back for the free grace he has poured out on me. I love getting things for free, so how come I can’t  understand the Gospel. The funny thing is I need free grace to be able to understand it. God gives us the very thing we need to understand what he gives us.

Think about this lyric from the hymn “Come ye sinners”

Let no conscience make you linger

Not of fitness fondly dream

All the fitness he requires is that you feel your need for Him

This he give you, This he gives you

Tis the Spirits rising beam

why customizable church signs are a terrible idea.

ESV Bible=ipod

16Apr08

What do I mean by the ESV being equal to the ipod, well I will tell you.

Apple has the fun little habit of coming out with a cool, new, more awesome than ever ipod and then a month later coming out with a new, better than ever, even more awesome ipod.

So you get and ipod photo and then a month later they come out with an ipod video and then a month after that they come out with an ipod video with cover flow and then a month after they come out with an ipod touch. So you buy what you think is the coolest best ipod and then before you know it, it is out of date and not so cool.

The same can be said for the ESV. I have one, it has a pretty nice design and feel to it, but I can’t keep up. Every time I am at the book store there is a new, cooler, better designed, better featured better feeling ESV. Why Crossway? Why Apple? Why would you do this to me?

“He wants justice in the mystical world of Azeroth, protecting warriors, warlocks and rogues from what he calls a conspiracy threatening their way of life.”

The above quote is from this article that deals with the controversial practice of gold farming in the super cool game “World of War Craft.”

Here is another great quote: “They show that they have no skill,” Izquierdo said. “The guy who has spent time on his character will come out on top … You feel more worthy of your gear and your character when you put the time into your character.”

I have an idea. How about you take a shower, throw away the chain wallet, get a tan, move out of your moms house, and make some real friends, like in real life!

Book Club has recently wrapped up another book: John Piper’s God is the Gospel. Dr. Piper is one of my favorite authors and pastors. God is the Gospel does not dissapoint. The basic premise of the book is that the greatest gift and good of the gospel is God himself. The reason the Gospel is good is because we get God.

We get so caught in the good gospel gifts such as justification, predestination, and sanctification that we overlook the fact that God gives us these gifts as means to an end, that end being himself. God, through these gifts, removes every obstacle that comes between us and a relationship with the father. Piper urges us not to elevate the gift above the giver. He asks the question in the beginnign of the book, “we would be happy in heaven if Jesus wasn’t there?” sadly so often that answer is yes. We picture heaven as golf, and steaks, and family, and friends, but the ultimate glory of heaven and gift of the gospel is that all the barriers between us and God have been removed. The greatest gift of the gospel is God himself. I would encourage everyone to pick up this short read and let it challenege you and how you view the gift of the gospel.

We have started The Case for Covenantal Infant Baptism. I’ll keep you posted on that as we work our way through it.
